A retirement gift that holds the whole career
Thirty years of work do not fit on a plaque. They fit in a portrait: the napkin the biggest deal was sketched on, the bottom drawer with the emergency Burgundy, the people who were there for all of it.
Why the usual retirement gift falls flat
An engraved clock says how long. A framed certificate says what for. Neither says who. After three decades, everyone in the building knows the stories: the phrase they always used, the way the floor went quiet when they picked up the phone, the thing in the drawer nobody was supposed to know about.
Those stories are what a retirement should be remembered by, and they are what a story-portrait is made from.
How thirty years become one picture
You cannot paint everything, and a portrait that tries turns into a poster. The interview asks about the parts of a life that make a person recognisable: what they actually did all day, the habit everyone teased them about, the object that was unmistakably theirs, the running jokes, who they were to the people around them, and what comes next.
From those answers the studio chooses the strongest combination. Some things will not appear, and that editing is part of the craft. Eight details spread across someone's work, their people and their next chapter make a portrait people recognise the moment they open it.
One example, from a made-up career
From the interview
A retirement gift for Rob
- His biggest deal was sketched on a restaurant napkin. It has hung framed in his office ever since.
- When Rob is closing, his voice drops an octave and the whole floor goes quiet to listen.
- The bottom drawer holds one very good Burgundy, strictly 'for emergencies only'.
Rob is a fictional person we invented to show the process. The photo is a model image and the interview was written by us; no real customer's story appears on this page.
When colleagues chip in
Most retirement gifts are bought by a group, and a group knows more than any one person in it. Before the interview, send a few questions round: the moment you still tell people about, the habit that was so typically them, the phrase only the team would understand, the object you think of first. Collect the replies as they are and paste them in at the start. Three people remembering the same thing is how we know it belongs in the picture.
The exact questions to send are on the farewell gifts page.
Questions people ask about retirement gifts
Can the whole team contribute?
Yes. One person orders and does the ten-minute interview; everyone else sends their replies to a few questions beforehand. Those replies go into the interview at the start, in their own words.
Can we frame it ourselves?
Yes. You receive one print-quality digital file that prints sharply up to A2, through any printer or framer you choose.
How far ahead should we order?
You see your piece within 48 hours of finishing the interview, and one revision round is included if something is off. A week before the date leaves comfortable room for the revision and the framing. Tell us the date in the interview and we will say honestly whether we can make it.
What if they have had several employers?
Then the portrait covers a working life rather than one company. The interview asks what they did, where, and with whom; the picture can hold the first job and the last one side by side. If a particular office, product or logo matters, a reference photo is the only way to get the real thing rather than our interpretation of it.
Is it made by AI?
Yes, directed by us. You tell the story in a guided interview, we turn it into a written brief, and the brief drives the image. A person then checks every version before anything reaches you. The questions page has the full answer.
An honest note
Your piece is created with the help of AI image generation, directed by us. You tell us the story in a guided interview; we turn what you said into a detailed brief, and that brief is what drives the image. Then a person looks at what came out and decides whether it is good enough to send you. Most first attempts are not.
The AI is the brush. The story is yours, and the judgement about whether it is any good is ours.
